Brazil – For the second time in a week the Free Pass Movement called a protest against a recent rise in public transportation fare and for the second time Brazilian police attacked with tear gas, sound grenades and rubber bullets.

A few thousand gathered downtown for today’s demonstration and marched down the avenue until they were met with a police cordon.

Over a 100 MP’s (Military/Shock police) blocked the road and began to corral the marchers. The group of protesters were surrounded by MP’s when they began to use weapons. Videos show the savagery of the assault on the mostly student protest.

Organizers stated that 28 people needed treatment for injuries. People were beaten with batons, shot with rubber bullets and suffered tear gas exposure as the crowd tried to find a way to escape.

Tonight and Friday’s protests were mobilized after Sao Paulo Mayor Fernando Haddad raised bus fares from 3.50 reals to 3.80 reals, then Rio de Janeiro’s mayor raised that city’s fare from 3.40 to 3.80 reals.
