In the capital Ankara and in Istanbul, almost 100 people were detained and 30 people were injured, including eight police officers, according to the Istanbul Governorship.
Kurdish resistance against ISIL attacks in Kobanê, region by the Syria-Turkey border, has been heating up Turkey. Ruling AK Party’s hesitation in the involvement caused rage in millions of Kurdish citizens, blaming the government of providing support to the radical Islamist organization and taking no action towards their advance in the area. People have been taking the streets for more than 24 hours. Protests include not only southeast cities with a dominant Kurdish population, but also many western metropolis such as İstanbul and İzmir.
At least 8 protesters are killed and 32 injured (not counting ISIL supporters), as reported by Evrensel. Police have been using live ammunition in many cities, and General Directory of Security in Ankara cancelled all annual leaves in the police force. Radical İslamists also took the streets, opening fire on the protesters. Ministry of Internal Affairs declared: A curfew is now in effect in 5 cities: Van, Mardin, Siirt, Diyarbakır, Batman.
People are still in the streets and clashes continue. Official buildings and the ruling AK Party’s offices were also attacked, and roads were blocked during some of the protests. Security forces fired into the air in some places to disperse the crowd.
Efkan Ala (Minister of Internal Affairs) says they will respond violence with more violence, told people retreat from the streets or there will be unpredictable consequences.
